Advanced Filters –
Links to a page
by Paul Myers, BBC Training & Development

A web site can be compared to a magazine - a collection of non-linear articles, indexed by a front page. One immediate characteristic of web pages is their connectivity. Unlike Word documents web pages do not live alone.

Being non-linear, pages contain links to other relevant sections of the site and indeed other relevant sites. Many sites have special sections devoted to World Wide web links that centre on the main subject of the site. A visit to the links section of a Madonna fan site will give you links to loads of similar sites.

If we have found a particularly interesting website, it might be useful to see who links to it. Perhaps we can find an article about the subject we are interested in that points to this web site. Maybe a comprehensive list of links to similar sites.

Fortunately, most search engines allow you to search for pages that link to a given address. As with other advanced search filters, the syntax varies from search engine to search engine.
