Description:
Wherever BBC staff are at work there must be someone available to deal with any injury that occurs. Where there are more than 15 workers (BBC or otherwise) present at a BBC premises, this should be done by a qualified First Aider. For productions at non-BBC premises and other locations, a risk assessment must be carried out to determine the appropriate level of first aid cover (e.g. via a qualified First Aider, shared first aid facilities or a location medic etc). A declaration of suitability to receive first aid at work training must be completed, signed by both delegate and line manager and returned to the Safety Training Co-ordination Team before delegates can attend the training. Who it's for:
Staff who are interested in becoming a Designated First Aider in the workplace must go through the first aiders selection criteria and gain consent from their line managers before undertaking the training. Aims:
to be familiar with the principles of first aid to be able to recognise and deal with a wide range of emergency medical conditions or injuries.
Outline:
Topics covered including the use of demonstrations and practice sessions: Care of the unconscious casualties Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)Electrical Shock Blood loss and Shock Respiratory difficulties Asphyxia Asthma Burns & Scalds Bone Injuries Poisoning (by ingestion or inspiration) Recognising and managing major medical conditions e.g. Heart attacks Epilepsy Diabetic comas Managing more common call out cases eg Faints Hyperventilation Panic Attacks Renal pain Acute Back Spasms Gastric problems Heat exhaustion or heat stress Minor injuries e.g. grazes and abrasions, splinters Movement of injured casualty to a safe area Where to refer Communications to management, external medical agencies Records Management
Outcome:
Delegates who pass the practical test will become qualified First Aiders at Work and be listed as BBC first aiders covering the area they work at. If qualified previously, this qualification is valid for 3 years from the date on the earlier certificate.
Prerequisites:
A declaration of suitability to receive first aid at work training must be completed, signed by both delegate and line manager, and returned to the Safety Training Co-ordination Team before delegates can attend this training. Delegates need to be physically fit.
