A 1 day introduction to the new technology systems and terminology of HDTV. Covering the major de facto and internationally agreed standards, with the implications for capture, storage, contribution, distribution and transmission.

To provide a structured introduction to the technological principles and practice of HDTV systems.
Outline:
Resolution: the human eye and how all TV systems are based around a few basic numbers. Square pixels:The Common Image Format(CIF). Progressive Vs Interlace. Down Conversion and Up conversion. Colourimetry: Gamma and HDTV vs SD TV. 1080i/p and 720p: analogue timing and level & the variable blanking time used to achieve the CIF. Differences between SD and HD-SDI formats. Audio & HD-SDI: Embedding AES/EBU and Dolby E Dual Link: 3 Gigabit/sec systems for 4:4:4:4 amd 1080p 50 capture. Installation:cable and connector properties at 1.485Gbps. File systems used for HD storage and transportation. Practical session based on knowledge dicussed throughout. Distribution and Tranmission. HD Display Systems.
Outcome:
Delegates will acquire an undertanding of the new terminology surrounding HDTV engineering. Practical experience gained over the course will help in appreciaing the new installation issues that face HDTV systems.
Prerequisites:
Knowledge and experience of analogue television technology and rec 601.656 SDI is required; however the courses can be modified for a particular target group or team.
