Description:
This interactive workshop covers the management of health and safety risks during the set build process, from the concept design stage to the build, use, strike, turnaround and storage of the set. It discusses the roles and responsibilities of key parties, practical ways of identifying and reducing the risk, the importance of communication and cooperation, principals of Construction Design Management Regulations, how to conduct a suitable and sufficient risk assessment and lessons learnt from previous accidents. The workshop uses a case study to draw out the learning points and follows the case study set from its conception stage to its use, strike and storage.

Who it's for:
Those responsible for the design and build of production sets, specifically the Designer, Art Director, Construction Manager, Props Master, Props Buyer and Production Managers involved with managing productions that involve sets.

Aims:
Provide information and develop skills to enable individuals to understand their role and responsibilities within the set design/construction process and to manage the safety and health risks under their control.

Outcome:
It is intended that learners should be able to demonstrate: ·         An understanding of why we need to manage safety risks on production sets. Including relevant legislation. ·         An understanding of safety responsibilities and the importance of competence for these responsibilities ·         An ability to identify safety and health hazards at different stages in the production design/build process ·         How to identify, and complete, a suitable and sufficient risk assessment, specifically design and construction risk assessments ·         What significant risk assessment findings need to be recorded and when an assessment should be reviewed ·         An understanding of the difference between generic, model and specific risk assessments ·         Accepted practice for controlling key risks, such as working at height, audience rostrum and seating, hazardous materials, fire hazards. ·         A knowledge of structural basics and when and how to get further information, including structural surveys. ·         An understanding of the principals of CDM Regulations and how they apply to production sets ·         How to communicate safety risks and controls effectively and information that needs to be exchanged ·         How to assess staff and contractors safety competencies ·         When and what type of monitoring is required, and how to conduct effective monitoring ·         An understanding of the importance of coordination and control ·         Where to find further information and advice, including provision of checklists, guidance and contacts.
