Trainer: Matt Foster
Matt oversees much of the BBC’s network radio training - covering journalism, editorial and creative content. He teaches a wide range of courses covering all aspects of editorial and journalistic fundamentals, and radio production skills.
Work history
Matt has a broad experience of radio and television production. Matt started his career as a reporter in a busy local radio newsroom. He moved through a number of large city stations to run a newsroom and regularly present drive time news programmes.
A specialism in business and consumer journalism has seen Matt produce business output for BBC network radio, and also to produce a groundbreaking factual entertainment programme for Channel 4, winning Royal Television Society Best Daytime Show, 2000.
Matt joined BBC Training and Development from BBC Radio 4’s daily consumer programme ‘You & Yours’. There, he established a new Manchester edition of the programme; produced the first live programme on BBC Radio 4 to use a new digital playout system and contributed to a number of Sony Award nominated items.
Current projects and interests
Matt is about to embark on an MSc in Corporate Communications. He already has a first degree in Management Sciences, specialising in Marketing. As well as being an avid radio listener, Matt is also a member of the Radio Academy.
Matt’s favourite radio moments
Producing live radio results in many memorable moments – among them: forgetting to take a copy of the weather forecast to read into a news bulletin - and getting caught out when he tried to make it up; having a well-known presenter tell the audience that he was talking in her ear too much during a live programme; and those final few moments before the live programme he’s producing goes on air...
